Hi, friends! I don’t know about y’all, but I am suddenly in a Fall kind of mood. I am officially over the heat and humidity, and I’m ready to start fresh with a new season and a new wardrobe. Can anyone relate? Well, if you’re like me and live in the midwest/southern states, you know that you’re still due for at least another full month of the heat and humidity. You might get lucky and catch a “cold front” aka it’s below 90 for a few days. But really, it’s just too hot to start pulling out all the sweaters and boots. HOWEVER. There are a few subtle (and simple!) ways that you can start to dress for Fall right now. So today I’m sharing 6 of my favorite ways to do just that!

1. Pair a Long Sleeve with Shorts
One really great way to start introducing those fall pieces that you’re craving is to pair a long sleeve top with your shorts! I love the contrast that this look creates, and you’re way less likely to get as hot as you would in jeans. Plus, you can always roll your sleeves up! You can also do the same with your favorite mini skirt for a dressier going out look.
2. Switch Out Your Straw Hat for Felt
We all love our floppy straw hats for summertime, right? To create more of a Fall look, try swapping out your straw hat for felt or suede! In my opinion, nothing says fall more than texture. Just by simply switching out your hat, you instantly add more texture and warmth to your outfit without having to burn up in a sweater. Win, win.
3. Throw On A Light Cardigan
I’m almost always wearing some kind of layer because I stay cold when I’m inside. So this is one of my favorite transitional tips for sure. Throw on a cardigan with your shorts or dress and your outfit instantly becomes Fall-ready! To ensure that you don’t get too warm (it is unfortunately still the end of summer), I recommend wearing a tank or graphic tee underneath.
4. Go For a Darker Lip
This is one of the easiest ways to incorporate Fall into your end-of-summer wardrobe. Simply go for a slightly darker lipstick shade! I have been hooked on Stila products this summer, and they recently came out with a few darker, red, Fall-esque shades that I’m loving. I feel like a darker lip has me looking the part for Fall without even having to go into my closet.
5. Pair Booties with Your Shorts and Dresses
Whoever came up with the rule that boots can only be worn a certain time of the year is not my friend. And I don’t follow his rules haha. (I also think it’s perfectly ok to wear white after Labor Day, so sue me.) Of course, it’s way too hot to be wearing over the knee leather boots right now, but I think it’s totally ok to wear a light, comfy bootie this time of year. Especially ones with cutouts or perforated details that breathe well. I love to pair them with shorts, skirts and even dresses to help transition my wardrobe into fall.
6. Layer an Oversized Denim Jacket
A good denim jacket is a closet staple, and can really be worn year round, in my opinion. I LOVE a good oversized denim jacket most of all because it breathes when it’s warmer out. You can also opt to tie it around your waist or drape it over your shoulders instead of actually wearing it. SO many options with this one, which is why I love it!
Other Tips To Help You Dress for Fall Right Now
- Add more texture to your outfits with leather or suede shorts and skirts.
- Go for more muted, earthy tones like teal, dusty rose, rust red, etc.
- Change up your hair. This is one of my favorite parts of a new season. I’m actually going tomorrow to get my hair cut and colored and I can’t wait!
- Change up your nail polish. Put away the pinks and go for darker shades of blue, green, or burgundy.

Ah great tips! I actually didn’t think about the whole swapping a straw hat for a felt one. That’s a good one! Thanks for sharing Hayley!
