Is it just me, or is anyone else dying for some fall weather? Please give me all the sweaters and booties and lattes. It’s really hard to talk about fall when it’s literally 110 degrees outside, but I’m hoping that if I talk about it and dress for it, it will come haha. Also, it’s that time of year where you don’t really want to buy anymore summer clothes but aren’t quite ready to commit to full on fall either. The ever-popular (in the blogging world, at least) transitional season will be upon us before we know it.
The Transitional Staple You Need Now
It’s one of my favorite times of year, and a chance to get super creative with what you have in your closet. But there are some key pieces you need to take your wardrobe that extra mile. Any guesses on which one I’m sharing today? If you’ve been following along on Instagram lately, you probably know because I share it in almost every post. It’s the old faithful denim jacket! Keep reading for why denim jackets are an essential transitional staple, what to look for in a good denim jacket, and how to style it in between seasons.

Why You Need a Classic Denim Jacket
Layers are key to a good transitional wardrobe, and a denim jacket is the mother of all layers. It’s a neutral (because denim), so it goes with literally everything. If your outfit is ever “missing something” you can almost guarantee a denim jacket will fix it. Not to mention it’s one of those pieces that, if you find the right one, will never go out of style and fit you like it was made for you. It is transitional staple GOALS.

How to Find the Perfect Style
I’ve tried on many a denim jacket over the years, and I was pretty picky when it came to finding the one for me. Mainly because I was looking to invest, therefore it needed to be exactly what I wanted. Some things that I look for when it comes to finding a good denim jacket include fit, wash, fabric, and overall quality. Of course there are all kinds of trends and fits when it comes to jackets like this. You have the oversized trucker jacket (which I also have and love for the right outfit), cropped styles, destroyed denim, acid washed denim, embroidery, embellishments, and all the things. While I don’t mind a trendy denim jacket, I think it’s important to have a classic, well-fitting option that will never go out of style.
What I Look For in A Good Denim Jacket
I prefer a classic fit that hits right above the hips. It has a more tailored fit and works with all types of outfits from dresses to jeans or shorts. For the wash, I don’t like anything too crazy. A traditional medium blue wash with very little distressing is a good option if you’re going for classic. When it comes to the actual denim fabric, I prefer something that isn’t too rigid or thick. I good medium weight, soft denim is great for wearing through all seasons. Also, be sure to check the fabrication. The one I’m wearing in these photos is 100% cotton and it is by far my favorite denim jacket I’ve ever found.
Pro Tip: Don’t be afraid to invest in a good denim jacket. If you find one you love and plan on wearing it for years to come, you have nothing to lose! Plus you’re most likely saving money if you never need to buy another one.

How to Style a Denim Jacket Between Seasons
I really can’t think of many ways you shouldn’t style a denim jacket. When you’re talking about transitioning between seasons, there are so many ways you can use it to take a summer wardrobe right into fall. A couple of my favorite ways to style a denim jacket during this time of year include pairing it with a midi skirt and tee, summer dress (or jumpsuit), or a good pair of (biker) shorts. I’m also really loving the denim-on-denim look right now. There are seriously so many options, and you can’t go wrong, no matter how you decide to style it.

About My Outfits
The striped jumpsuit at the top of the post is from one of my favorite boutiques, wearNYLA. They have some of the cutest things ever! I am wearing a size small and it definitely fits like a glove, which is rare for me. The jacket is my favorite ever from Abercrombie and is currently on sale! I’m wearing a size medium. I sized up one just to make sure I had enough room in the shoulders and arms in case I wanted to wear it over something a little thicker later on.
The next outfit is one of my go-to’s lately. The boyfriend tee is one I wear at least twice a week from Aerie. I’m wearing a small and it’s still very oversized, which I love. Perfect for leggings and biker shorts! Speaking of, these biker shorts are also form Aerie. I’m wearing a small, but also have a pair in mediums. They are on the snug side, so if you’re between sizes or don’t want them skin tight, I would size up!
